Terms of service
Last updated · July 8, 2026
Welcome to UnderstandMyRating. These terms of service ("terms") are a legal agreement between you and Understand My Policy, Inc., a Delaware corporation, doing business as UnderstandMyRating ("we," "us," "our"), which operates the service at understandmyrating.com (the "service"). By using the service, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
1. What UnderstandMyRating is (and is not)
UnderstandMyRating is an educational software tool. It reads a VA disability rating decision letter you upload and helps you understand it: it explains what the letter says in plain language, matches diagnostic codes to the published federal rating schedule, walks through how a combined rating is calculated under published federal rules, defines terms, and prepares questions you can bring to an accredited representative.
UnderstandMyRating is not a law firm, a Veterans Service Organization, an accredited claims agent, or an accredited representative, and it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or any government agency. We do not provide legal, medical, or financial advice.
Assistance with the preparation, presentation, or prosecution of a VA claim may, under federal law, only be provided by an accredited representative. We do not do any of those things. We do not file, draft, or submit anything to the VA, we do not advise whether you should appeal or take any action, and we do not evaluate the merit of your claim. Nothing in the service is a recommendation about your specific claim. For help with a claim or appeal, use a VA-accredited representative; the service links to VA's official accreditation search and to organizations that often help at no cost.
2. Explanations are AI-generated and may contain errors
Explanations, decoded codes, and calculations in the service are generated in part by an artificial-intelligence language model (Claude, provided by Anthropic). AI-generated output can be wrong or incomplete. The service is for general educational purposes only, and you should not rely on it as the sole basis for any decision. Each explanation links to its governing official source; always verify important figures, codes, and explanations against those sources and with an accredited representative before acting.
3. No guarantee of outcomes
Ratings, benefits, and claims are decided by the VA, not by us. We make no promise that using the service will change your rating, your benefits, or the outcome of any claim. Compensation figures shown in the service are the published federal rates, provided for reference; they are not a promise of what you will receive.
4. Data sources and accuracy
The service relies on public federal data, including the rating schedule in 38 CFR Part 4, the combined-ratings rules in 38 CFR §4.25 and §4.26, and VA compensation rates, together with the document you upload. Public data can contain errors, and there can be a delay between a change in the official record and its appearance in the service. We provide it "as is" and do not warrant that any explanation, calculation, or generated document is accurate, complete, or current. Always verify important figures against your official letter and the linked official sources.
5. Eligibility and accounts
You must be at least 18 years old and able to form a binding contract to use the service. You can use the free decode, and complete a purchase, without an account. If you create an account to save or return to your documents, you are responsible for the security of your credentials and for activity under your account. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.
6. Purchases and refunds
Paid features are offered at the prices and on the terms displayed at checkout. Pricing is one-time; there is no subscription and no automatic renewal. Payments are processed by our payment provider; we do not store your full card details.
If a paid product does not generate after payment, we will not charge you, or we will refund the charge. For any other refund request, contact us at support@understandmyrating.com and we will work with you in good faith. Except as required by law or as stated at checkout, purchases are otherwise final.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to: use the service for any unlawful purpose; use it to provide claims assistance to others in a way that would require accreditation; upload content you do not have the right to submit, or that contains another person's information without authorization; scrape, bulk-download, or systematically extract data from the service; resell or redistribute the service or its outputs except as expressly permitted; interfere with or disrupt the service; attempt to access accounts or data that are not yours; or misrepresent the service as affiliated with the VA, a law firm, or an accredited representative.
8. Your content
You retain ownership of the documents and information you upload. You grant us a limited license to process them in order to provide the service, including through third-party processing providers (for example, to extract text and generate explanations). We do not use your uploaded documents to market to third parties. How we handle your uploaded documents is described in our privacy policy, which is part of these terms.
9. Our intellectual property
The service, including its software, design, text, and generated document templates, is owned by us or our licensors and is protected by law. The underlying federal data is public-domain U.S. government work. Documents generated for you are yours to use. You may not copy, modify, or create derivative works of the service itself, or use our branding without permission.
10. Third-party services
The service depends on third-party providers, including payment processing, authentication, hosting, email delivery, analytics, and AI document analysis. We are not responsible for outages or errors in third-party services, and your use of those services may be subject to their own terms.
11. Disclaimer of warranties
The service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. The service is not a substitute for advice or representation from a VA-accredited representative or a licensed professional. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
12. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost benefits, lost data, or lost opportunities, arising out of or related to the service. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for all claims relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the three months before the claim arose or one hundred dollars. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations of liability, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
13. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from your violation of these terms, your violation of applicable law, or your misuse of the service.
14. Termination
You can stop using the service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these terms or if we discontinue the service.
15. Changes to the service and these terms
We may modify the service and these terms. If we make material changes to these terms, we will post the updated terms with a new effective date and, where appropriate, notify account holders by email. Continued use of the service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
16. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the state of Florida, without regard to conflict of law rules, except where preempted by federal law. Any dispute arising from these terms or the service will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Palm Beach County, Florida, and you consent to their jurisdiction. Either party may seek relief in small claims court for qualifying disputes.
17. General terms
These terms, together with the privacy policy and any terms presented at checkout, are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the service. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect. Our failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of it. You may not assign these terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets. We are not liable for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
